Patrick Dougherty Stickwork
On View Through 2019
Hodgepodge (Built June 4-22, 2018 with the help of 50 volunteers)
Patrick Dougherty, a renowned environmental artist, has mesmerized the public around the world with his whimsical sculptural creations. For over 35 years, he has honed his craft bending and weaving natural materials into over 285 monumental interactive installations.
- Footprint: 30’ X 60’, and 20’ tall
- Material: Several varieties of locally harvested willows
"I began this work thinking of Japanese pottery in square shapes and similarly shaped hedges I have seen. The design morphed as I worked to include sloping shoulders to shed snow.
The sculpture is sited within a crescent of trees, creating an intimate space behind it. Some of the individual elements lean; some bend at the waist, falling into each other. This is meant to suggest camaraderie and interdependence." - Patrick Dougherty
The Town of Vail’s Art in Public Places thanks over 50 volunteers, the public works department, Cookie & Jim Flaum, and Sylvan Lake State Park for making our Stickwork installation possible.
