Ice Sculpture Event Coming to Vail Village January 2008
The sculptures will be designed by Lawrence Argent, the artist responsible for the Big Blue Bear sculpture that has become the signature of the Denver Convention Center. Argent is collaborating with internationally acclaimed ice sculptor Scott Rella whose sculptures have delighted Vail visitors for years. Rella will begin carving the ice in early January. The event will continue through the winter until the ice melts.
According to Leslie Fordham, Art in Public Places coordinator, the sculptures will celebrate the elements of Vail’s winter environment with organic shapes, ten to fifteen feet high. Each of the forms will have an environmental theme and will be lit internally with energy-efficient LEDs that will be programmed to change color throughout the evening. “The beauty will be in the size, shape and the lighting,” she said. Some of the sculptures will be out in the open; others will be placed among the trees on Gore Creek Promenade near the International Bridge.
